Can non-airbrush paints be dilluted and used in airbrushes?

I've never used an airbrush so I need some tips. I intend to get a very cheap airbrush and practice. Since I have no intention of creating anything yet, I'd prefer not to use expensive airbrush paints. Is there an alternative.
