How much paint really depends on how big the resevoir is, and how big you want to paint. What's more important is how thick the paint is.

Thinned watercolour paint works great - it never clogs the tip. It should be the consistency of cream. Use watercolours for practicing your technique on paper - it's the most affordable and easy to clean up.

If you're using acrylic paint, thin with acrylic airbrush medium and not water - water makes it dry too fast and it will clog the airbrush. Airbrush medium has flow improvers and retarders to keep the paint from clogging the tip. You can also purchase pre-mixed paint specifically for airbrushing.

Clean with Windex or a good ammonia-based cleaner by running it through the brush as if it was paint. If you're getting spatters, it's time to clean. If after painting it stops spraying paint, you may have to take the airbrush apart to clean it - keep your assembly diagram handy so you get all the parts together the right way. Be gentle with assembly.

Have fun, it's a great tool!
